An Bhoth GAA Club Notes 25/05/2026 Senior Men Our Senior Men were narrowly beaten away by a strong Cremartin side on Saturday evening in Round 5 of the Loughman Sports Senior League, with the home side edging the contest on a 1-18 to 0-20 scoreline. Scotstown trailed by four at the break, 0-14 to 0-10, but produced a strong second-half response and battled all the way to the finish in a closely fought game. Monaghan matched Armagh for long spells in a hugely committed and entertaining contest, but the Orchard County finished the stronger in extra time to secure their first Ulster title since 2008. While the result did not go Monaghan’s way, there was immense pride in Scotstown’s strong representation throughout the county panel and matchday team. Rory, Ryan, Mícheál, Conor, Jack and Max have all played important roles in Monaghan’s final, including fine scores by Conor (0-4); Jack (0-3, 1 x two pointer); Rory (0-2, two pointer free); Ryan (0-1); Mícheál (0-1); and the club is immensely proud of their efforts in helping the county reach the provincial decider, with Monaghan’s comeback from 7 points down in the second half inspired by Jack’s introduction . Their overall contribution to another memorable championship run for Monaghan reflects great credit on themselves, their families and the club. Junior Ladies – Monaghan Junior League & Reserve League Brigid O Neills 7-14 Scotstown 1- 3 Pearse Park, Ballybay was the venue for our newly established Junior team’s third Reserve League game versus newly promoted seniors Brigid O'Neills on Saturday evening. This game had been viewed as a challenging assignment vs last year’s Ulster Intermediate finalists and so it came to pass. Scotstown took to the field short seven of the team from the previous round win vs Sean Mc Dermotts. Abigail Finnegan won referee Noel Callan’s throw-in, Scotstown opened the scoring and made the early running. Mary Murphy, Briana Mac Cinna, Isobel Waddington, Finnegan and Saorlaith Groarke settled best early on and took the game to Brigids. On her first start, Natasha Beggan was the standout player in the forward line while Rhia Nar impressed from the bench. Both teams traded scores and wides in an opening period of free flowing football. A long range effort from Lisa Sherlock found the Brigid's net for the first goal of the game. Sherlock's goal sparked a strong reaction with Megan Millar leading the home forward line in pegging back the Scotstown lead to go in at halftime leading 3-06 to 1-02. Shauna Mc Dwyer was impressive in defence for Scotstown when introduced early in the second half before the home team took control with Machailla Mc Cabe entering the fray up front. A succession of Brigid’s scores ended the game as a contest midway through the half. Scotstown elected to give game time to all players present to further this team’s development, Laura Holohan a notable introduction from the bench. An Ulster final is always one of the biggest and most special occasions in the football calendar, and it promises to be a memorable day for players, management and supporters alike. We send our very best wishes to the Monaghan team and management, and especially to our own club representatives Rory, Ryan, Mícheál, Conor, Jack, and Max as they prepare for this huge occasion. Everyone in Scotstown will be proudly behind them and hoping for a great day for the county. Match essentials Fixture: Monaghan v Armagh — Ulster SFC Final. Date and time: Sunday 17th May, 4:15pm. Venue: Clones. Tickets: Unfortunately, due to the excessive demand for tickets, there had been a significant shortfall in the number of tickets the club can allocate to members. Our allocation was reduced by 34%. We regret that we cannot facilitate all requests. Those who have been allocated tickets will be contacted via message/email by Thursday. If you do not receive a message, unfortunately, tickets have not been allocated. Please do not contact club officers. This was a very onerous task, very much beyond our control. Thanks to everyone for your patience, understanding and support. We fully appreciate the frustration and disappointment this causes, but unfortunately this situation is outside our control. Comhghairdeas Rory — GAA Player of the Week! Massive congratulations to Rory Beggan, who has been voted GAA Footballer of the Week after his incredible display in Monaghan GAA dramatic Ulster Semi Final win over Derry. Rory topped the national vote with 5,966 votes, finishing well ahead of the other nominees — a testament to how widely his performance was admired. Rory was at the heart of everything in one of the most dramatic championship games in recent memory. He finished with three two pointers, including the amazing last gasp final kick winner from 47 metres, and played a crucial role in Micheál Bannigan’s goal. His leadership was just as important as his scoring. In the chaotic closing moments of normal time — with the hooter sounded, confusion on the sideline, and Derry fans spilling onto the pitch — Rory was the one who challenged the referee, insisting Monaghan were entitled to take the sideline ball. That intervention proved vital, as Jack McCarron’s wonderful two pointer sent the game to extra time. From start to finish, Rory delivered a performance of composure, bravery, and sheer class — the kind of display that inspires a team and lifts a county. Everyone in the parish and beyond is immensely proud of you. Well done Rory!!! Rory Beggan on Team of the Week Another massive congratulations to Rory Beggan for making the GAA team of the week for his exceptional and amazing performance during the Semi Final! Well done Rory. Also congratulations to Aughnamullen GAA Mícheál Bannigan and Ballybay Pearse Brothers GAA Dessie Ward for also making the Team of the Week. In a game full of intensity, resilience, a 12 point comeback and big‑moment last gasp brilliance, the county team showed immense character to force extra‑time and then power over the line in front of a massive Farney crowd in Armagh. It was a proud day for Scotstown, with our players once again central to Monaghan’s success. Jack McCarron (who score 0-3) delivered one of the defining moments of the match, holding his nerve to land a last‑gasp magnificent equaliser at the end of normal time, a pressure two pointer kick from the side line that kept Monaghan alive and sent the game to extra‑time. Rory Beggan was outstanding throughout, contributing 0–6 (including three superb two‑pointers) and nailing the decisive extra‑time free that ultimately sealed the win. His kick‑outs, long‑range accuracy and calmness under pressure were exemplary. Mícheál Bannigan’s excellent goal came directly from Scotstown influence, with Rory Beggan won the Derry kick‑out, delivered the quick pass, and Bannigan finished clinically to swing momentum Monaghan’s way. Congratulations to Rory winning the Man of the Match. Ryan O’Toole, Mícheál McCarville (0-3, two pointer) and Conor McCarthy (0-2, two pointer) all played key roles, bringing physicality, pace and smart decision‑making in a fiercely contested battle. This was a performance full of heart, belief and quality, and the club is immensely proud of how our players represented Scotstown on the provincial stage. Massive congratulations to the entire Monaghan panel and management team on reaching the Ulster Final. The county moves forward with huge momentum, and we wish the team and management every success as preparations continue for the next challenge, which takes place in Clones on Sunday 17th May. Match essentials Fixture: Monaghan v Armagh — Ulster SFC Final. Date and time: Sunday 17th May, 4:15pm. Venue: Clones. Tickets: Details on Tickets for the game will be made available shortly, please see our social media platforms. Congratulations to Rory Beggan Man of the Match A huge congratulations to Rory Beggan — Man of the Match after a stunning display that sent Monaghan into the Ulster final in the most dramatic thrilling and exciting Ulster Semi Final of the ages! What a game for Rory Beggan and the Monaghan team and management! Rory finished the game with 0‑6 (three perfect two‑pointers) and calmly slotted the final extra‑time 45 metre free right at the death to send Monaghan into the Ulster final after trailing by a point. Rory’s influence went well beyond his scoring and goalkeeping, he played a key role in Micheál Bannigan’s brilliant goal, winning the Derry kick‑out and delivering the inch‑perfect pass that led to the crucial green flag. The finish to normal time was unbelievable: Jack McCarron’s dramatic and exceptional sideline two‑pointer which forced extra‑time, was enabled by Rory who was at the centre of the protests and discussions with the referee, justifiably arguing that the sideline kick should be allowed after the hooter. A massive well done to Rory on a composed, match‑winning performance and to the entire Monaghan team and management for an extraordinary comeback. Monaghan U20 and Minor Ulster Championship wins Hard luck to the Monaghan U20 team who were defeated by a strong Tyrone side in the Ulster U20 Final on Wednesday evening. Despite a battling display, Monaghan were unable to match Tyrone’s second‑half surge, with the Tyrone U20s pulling clear to claim the provincial title by a scoreline 4-19 to 0-22. Well done to Monaghan for their work‑rate and resilience throughout, and made several comebacks but unfortunately wasn’t their day. From a Scotstown perspective, the club is immensely proud of the contribution of our players and management representatives throughout the entire U20 campaign. Max Maguire (Vice‑Captain), Tommy Mallen, Mark McCaffrey, Donnacha Connolly, Conal Gallagher and Seán Óg McElwain, along with Darren Hughes on the management team, and Barry McKenna in Strength and Conditioning, all played key roles in guiding Monaghan to the Ulster decider. Their leadership, commitment and performances across the championship have been widely praised, and they continue to be fantastic ambassadors for the club. Hard luck to the Monaghan Minors in their 3-16 to 0-18 defeat at home to Tyrone in Round 2 of the Ulster Minor Championship. Ulster Ladies Senior Championship Monaghan Ladies – Ulster Championship Semi‑Final Win 0-13 to 0-8 against Down. Huge congratulations to the Monaghan Ladies who recorded an excellent victory over Down to book their place in the Ulster Senior Championship Final. FTD Brothers Marathon Fundraiser – Tydavent Parish Stage of County Monaghan Last Friday, the remarkable FTD Brothers, Jordan and Cian Adams, passed through Tydavnet Parish, including Scotstown and Ballinode as part of their incredible challenge of running 33 marathons in 33 days, one in every county in Ireland, to raise vital funds and awareness for families affected by dementia. Their campaign supports both the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and the FTD Brothers Foundation, with 50% of all donations going directly to the Alzheimer Society. The Tydavnet Parish leg of the marathon brought a fantastic turnout from across the parish, with club members, families, neighbours and supporters lining the route to cheer the brothers on. It was a powerful and uplifting community moment, and the club was proud to stand behind such an inspiring cause. A huge thank you to everyone involved in the promotion and help provided along this part of their journey and all those who came out to support, to those who ran stretches alongside the brothers, and to all who donated or helped spread the word. Your encouragement meant a great deal to Jordan and Cian as they continue their journey around Ireland. We wish the FTD Brothers every success as they complete the remaining stages of this extraordinary fundraiser. Their resilience, positivity and commitment to supporting families living with dementia is truly inspiring. Senior Men Scotstown opened their 2026 Loughman Sports Senior League campaign at Páirc Mhuire on Saturday evening last against Corduff, producing a strong and composed performance to claim the first win of the season. The Blues started brightly, settling quickly into the game and taking control of possession. Early scores helped Scotstown build momentum, and the team carried that sharpness throughout the first half, moving the ball well and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Corduff responded strongly with spells of pressure, but Scotstown’s defence stood firm, turning over key attacks and launching several well-worked counter-moves leading 0-10 to 1-3. As the second half progressed, the home side continued to push on, adding important scores to keep daylight between the teams. In the closing stages, Scotstown managed the game intelligently, maintaining their lead and seeing out the contest with confidence to secure a deserved opening-round victory. A positive start to the league campaign, with plenty of encouraging signs across the pitch. Final score of 0-15 to 1-6. The senior men next play Inniskeen away on Sunday 26 th April at 3pm continuing the league series of competitive clashes both home and away throughout April, May, June and early July. With strong support behind them, we look forward to another committed and exciting league campaign. Junior Men Scotstown’s Junior Men put in a committed effort to Currin (played in Kilmore), but Currin proved the stronger team on the day, finishing out 4–15 to 3–7 in the opening round of the 2026 Junior Football League. Currin started sharply and built an early lead, but Scotstown responded well with a well-taken goal to keep themselves in the contest. The first half was competitive, with both sides trading scores, but Currin’s ability to convert chances gave them the advantage at the break. In the second half, Scotstown battled hard and struck for two more goals, showing great determination and work rate throughout the field. Currin, however, remained clinical in front of the posts, adding key scores that kept them in control as the game entered the final stages. Despite the result, the Scotstown men showed plenty of fight, created good scoring chances, and demonstrated strong teamwork in their first outing of the season. The game was tight throughout, with both sides enjoying periods of momentum and creating plenty of scoring chances. Scotstown struck for three well-worked goals, showing sharp movement and excellent finishing in the forward line. Magheracloone, however, were consistent and accurate with their point-taking, keeping the scoreboard ticking and edging ahead as the game entered the final stages. Despite pushing hard right to the final whistle and creating late opportunities, Scotstown were unable to close the gap, with Magheracloone holding on for a narrow win. A committed display from the team with lots of positives to take into the next round. Full-time: Scotstown 3–7, Magheracloone 1–13 The ladies travel to Magheracloone again on Sunday, 26 April, 11:30 am for Round 3 of the Reserve League Division 1.

An Bhoth GAA Club Notes – 06/01/2026 Heartbreaking Exi t for Brave Scotstown in All-Ireland Semi-Final Kingspan Breffni Park, Sunday 4th January 2026 St Brigid’s (Roscommon) 1-16 Scotstown 1-12 Scotstown’s club championship campaign came to a valiant end in freezing conditions in Breffni Park, as Connacht champions St Brigid’s held on for a four-point win in a gripping semi-final. Despite a strong fightback and several goal chances that could have turned the tie, the Ulster champions fell just short, leaving huge pride alongside inevitable disappointment after a season that delivered our first provincial title in 36 years. The game sprang into life early, with Rory Beggan pointing a ’45 to open the scoring for Scotstown. St Brigid’s landed a major blow on six minutes when Brian Derwin finished clinically to the net. Two further points quickly followed, giving the Roscommon men a four-point lead. Scotstown responded brilliantly. Nicky Sherlock clipped a fine point, and moments later Jack McCarron rifled home a superb goal across the goalkeeper to level the contest at 1-2 apiece. St Brigid’s edged back in front with a point, before Max Maguire replied with a well-placed score. Francis Maguire then landed a spectacular two-pointer and by the 18th minute Scotstown were two up and looking dangerous, dominating possession while our defence repelled several Brigid’s attacks. However, St Brigid’s began to take control through midfield and transition play, using their recent experience of deep championship runs. They reeled off a run of points, including a Bobby Nugent two-pointer, to lead 1-10 to 1-6 at the break. It was an intense half, with both sides trading scores, but Brigid’s clinical counter-attacking proved the difference. Second Half Scotstown pushed hard to reel in the deficit and created big opportunities. The key moment came around the 55th minute when Jack McCarron rounded the keeper, only for Seán Trundle to produce a fine block on the line — a pivotal stop. Early in the second half, Shane Carey and Francis Maguire landed two excellent points to keep the gap to four. Later, with 13 minutes gone, Jack added a fine score to make it 1-13 to 1-9 to St Brigid’s, before the Roscommon men struck a two-pointer to extend their lead to six with 13 minutes of normal time remaining. Scotstown then tapped into the resilience and comeback spirit that has become a trademark of this team and club, creating an eclectic mix of chances that on another day would have carried the Blues through, as described above. During this spell, Jack scored two excellent points to cut the deficit back to four with eight minutes remaining. Despite the pressure, strong possession and turnovers, Scotstown could only add one more point, where a fine goal effort by Mícheál McCarville narrowly dropped over the bar. In the end, St Brigid’s experience at this stage told as they managed the game well, adding insurance scores to maintain their four-point cushion. They now advance to face Dingle in the final on January 18th, but Scotstown return home with heads held high. This team, under David McCague, delivered unforgettable moments — ending the Ulster drought against Kilcoo and battling to a national semi-final for the first time in decades. The effort, spirit and skill shown, even in defeat, is a credit to the players, management and everyone in the club. Thanks to the tremendous travelling support who braved the cold — your backing was felt throughout. We’ll regroup, reflect on a memorable journey, and come back stronger in 2026. Scorers for Scotstown Jack McCarron 1-3 (1f) Francis Maguire 0-3 (1 × two-pointer) Micheál McCarville 0-2 Rory Beggan 0-1 (’45) Shane Carey 0-1 (1f) Max Maguire 0-1 Nicky Sherlock 0-1 Scotstown scorers Rory Beggan 0-11 (4 × two point free, 2 × 45, 1 × free), Conor McCarthy 0-3 (1 × two pointer), Mattie Maguire 0-2, Kieran Hughes 0-2, Ryan O’Toole 0-1. Commiserations & Huge Thanks to Our Senior Team & Management Sunday’s All-Ireland Semi-Final didn’t go our way. The disappointment is real, but the pride we feel in this group is even stronger. You gave everything in Breffni Park against a strong St Brigid’s side, falling just short in a hard-fought semi-final (1-12 to 1-16). The overriding emotion from supporters is huge pride and gratitude for what has been an outstanding journey this season. To our senior players, management and backroom team — thank you. You gave the Scotstown community a season filled with heart, resilience and moments that brought people together. Winning both the Monaghan Senior Championship and the Ulster Senior Championship speaks volumes about commitment, character and the spirit of this club. You carried the hopes of the parish onto the biggest stage and represented Scotstown with class every step of the way. From hard training nights to battles on the field, you inspired young and old across the community. While Sunday wasn’t our day, the journey will be remembered with pride. The support behind you remains as strong as ever, and we know this team will rise again. To the supporters who travelled in huge numbers on the day and throughout the year — your voices, flags and unwavering backing meant the world to the team and management. An Bhoth GAA Club Notes 16/12/2025 Scotstown Claim Fifth Ulster Title After Extra-Time Epic Against Kilcoo AIB Ulster Club SFC Final BOX-IT Athletic Grounds, Armagh – Saturday 13 December 2025 Scotstown 0-19 Kilcoo 0-16 (AET) Scotstown GAA are Ulster champions once more. After 36 long years of heartbreak, including three Ulster Final defeats in the last decade, our Senior men finally bridged the gap they so richly deserved with a gripping extra-time victory over a resilient Kilcoo side. Captain Damien McArdle lifted the Seamus McFerran Cup in front of delirious blue and white supporters, marking the club’s fifth provincial crown. In a wind-swept Athletic Grounds, Scotstown showed tremendous character to withstand a fierce Kilcoo comeback before dominating extra-time when it mattered most. Man of the Match Rory Beggan was the undoubted hero among a brilliant and dedicated team, contributing a masterful 0-11, including several long-range two-pointers, while also making crucial saves to keep the Magpies at bay. Kilcoo elected to play into the strong wind in the opening half, adopting a possession-based approach designed to frustrate Scotstown’s attacking threats. It worked initially, limiting Scotstown to six first-half points despite holding a five-point lead. However, sustained pressure forced turnovers which were capitalised on superbly. Magnificent points from Mattie Maguire (two from play), along with Rory Beggan’s two perfect two-point frees, built a 0-6 to 0-1 half-time lead. Given the significant wind advantage, a tense second half was always expected. After the break, Scotstown surged forward, pushing their advantage to eight points at one stage. Beggan converted a ’45 and produced a vital save to deny Kilcoo a goal, while a well-worked score from Ryan O’Toole and a majestic strike from Kieran Hughes made it 0-9 to 0-1. Kilcoo, led by the accurate placed balls of Paul Devlin, mounted a determined fightback, reducing the margin to 0-9 to 0-8. Scotstown responded strongly and regained control through another excellent point from Kieran Hughes and a wonderful two-point free from Beggan, struck high against the wind, to move clear at 0-12 to 0-9. With one hand seemingly on the Seamus McFerran Cup, Scotstown led by three points entering injury time. However, Kilcoo forced extra-time with a late two-pointer followed by a dramatic last-gasp equaliser to level the match at 0-12 apiece. Extra-time saw Scotstown seize control once again. With the wind advantage in the first period, Rory Beggan and substitute Conor McCarthy combined for two superb two-pointers, stretching the lead to four points by the turnaround. Kilcoo briefly narrowed the gap, but Scotstown’s defence — marshalled superbly by Damien McArdle and the Hughes brothers — held firm. Beggan’s final free sealed the victory, sparking scenes of pure ecstasy as the final whistle sounded, confirming a 0-19 to 0-16 triumph. This Ulster success was built on resilience — from the dramatic penalty shoot-out semi-final win over Newbridge to digging deep against one of Ulster’s modern giants. The blend of experience and youth shone throughout, with every player contributing in a true team effort under the excellent guidance of manager David McCague and his outstanding management team. A massive congratulations to the team and management on this epic achievement and for bringing such immense early Christmas joy to the parish. Hard luck and commiserations to Kilcoo. Thanks to Pearse Óg Armagh for being exemplary hosts, and to Ulster GAA, Monaghan GAA and everyone involved in the organisation. Attention now turns to the All-Ireland semi-final against Connacht champions St Brigid’s in the New Year. For now, Scotstown can bask in provincial glory — Ulster kings once again. Scotstown GAA Club Tribute to The Northern Standard It is with great sadness that Scotstown GAA learned of the decision to cease publication of The Northern Standard after an incredible 186 years serving County Monaghan. For generations, The Northern Standard has been the voice of our community — on the field, chronicling county finals, Ulster campaigns and young players’ first steps in the game; and off the field, covering community initiatives such as Make Your Céilí, Scór and much more. Match reports, player profiles, award nights and iconic photographs preserved the proud history of Scotstown GAA, clubs across the county and Monaghan GAA for families to cherish forever. To the Smyth family, editors, journalists, photographers and staff past and present — including Colm Shalvay, Maitiu Monaghan, J.P. Graham, Rory Geary, Peadar McMahon, Sineád Hughes and Caroline McShane, who diligently featured our club notes every week — we extend our heartfelt thanks. This final edition on 18 December marks the end of an era, but the legacy of The Northern Standard will live on in Monaghan forever.
