Mackie Rooney Book Launch – This Friday 14th February – Scotstown Complex 8pm

A Book for the Ages - Book-Launch at Scotstown

Now that Storm Eowyn has passed we can look forward to getting out and about again and what better event to bring people together than a book-launch. And this sense of occasion will surely electrify those attending the Scotstown Sports Complex at 8 pm on Friday 14th (Feb.)

The keenly-awaited A Sliabh Beagh and North-Monaghan Miscellany has been safely delivered after a long gestation, but the wait has been most certainly worthwhile. The author, Scotstown-man Mackie Rooney, has spent half a lifetime immersed in the folklore and local history of his native parish of Tydavnet and Sliabh Beagh. His modus operandi was simplicity itself-interviewing elderly people and researching the archives of regional newspapers. Small wonder that the final product is a three-volume (1100 pages) ‘book for the ages’ which will ensure that the struggles, but also the lighter moments, of day-to-day life for our ancestors is not forgotten in this digital age.

Teeming with at least 150 topics from the naming of Sliabh Beagh to recent sporting events, we journey through the folklore of The Early Christian Period and Penal Times to the more documented history of the 19thand 20thcenturies-The Famine, The Fenians, Evictions and The Struggle for the Land, The War of Independence, The Establishment of the Border, Smuggling and the 1955-1962 Border Campaign. The book touches and deals sensitively with some controversial events which still rankle in the community. Not surprisingly, he gave a wide berth to some of these events but left the door ajar with ‘A Future Project’ on what could be revisited at another time. His interviews over many years with the elderly throw added light on the major events of the twentieth century. The many poems and photos add lustre to this insight.

Rooney is to be lauded in what was for him a labour of love. He appreciates that to know ourselves we must know our past. And yet, if we hope to move on, we cannot be shackled by the past.

A Sliabh Beagh and North-Monaghan Miscellany abounds in folklore which was quite common to an Ireland of former times-a belief in fairies, ghosts, banshees, and superstitions of a malign nature. However, the author has tossed in so many humorous pieces that we can feel assured that he, at least, is not in thrall, to this past, while yet shining a light on the lives of our ancestors. An excellent read and very good value at €40-£35.

Outlets for A Sliabh and North-Monaghan Miscellany following the launch: McMahons’ Centra; Martin the Butcher; The Pharmacy; Henry’s Bar;McCarvill’s, Killylough; The Village Shop, Ballinode; McAloon’s, Knockatallon; Emyvale Post Office; Luke Orru, Dunmoran N2; McAnenley Fuels Moy Bridge; Rock’s Stationary Park Street Monaghan; The Braeside Stores, Clonstibret; Katie’s Main St. Castleblayney; McAleers, Eshnadarra P.O. Ladies Football Senior Ladies – Monaghan Senior League & Reserve League Our Senior Ladies recorded a hard-earned 1-7 to 1-6 victory over Latton on Sunday in a closely contested encounter. Latton made the brighter start and led by 1-1 to 0-0 after nine minutes, but Scotstown responded well through points from Alannah Corrigan, Ella McKenna and Megan Boylan to trail by just one at half-time, 1-2 to 0-4. Scotstown carried that momentum into the second half and gradually edged their way back into the game before a brilliant goal from Grace Kelly helped swing the contest in their favour. A late point from Megan Boylan proved decisive as Scotstown held on for a deserved one-point win. Well done to the team and management. Attention now turns to Round 5, when Scotstown travel to Emmet Óg on Sunday 24th May at 11:00am. Junior Ladies – Monaghan Junior League & Reserve League Brigid O Neills 7-14 Scotstown 1- 3 Pearse Park, Ballybay was the venue for our newly established Junior team’s third Reserve League game versus newly promoted seniors Brigid O'Neills on Saturday evening. This game had been viewed as a challenging assignment vs last year’s Ulster Intermediate finalists and so it came to pass. Scotstown took to the field short seven of the team from the previous round win vs Sean Mc Dermotts. Abigail Finnegan won referee Noel Callan’s throw-in, Scotstown opened the scoring and made the early running. Mary Murphy, Briana Mac Cinna, Isobel Waddington, Finnegan and Saorlaith Groarke settled best early on and took the game to Brigids. On her first start, Natasha Beggan was the standout player in the forward line while Rhia Nar impressed from the bench. Both teams traded scores and wides in an opening period of free flowing football. A long range effort from Lisa Sherlock found the Brigid's net for the first goal of the game. Sherlock's goal sparked a strong reaction with Megan Millar leading the home forward line in pegging back the Scotstown lead to go in at halftime leading 3-06 to 1-02. Shauna Mc Dwyer was impressive in defence for Scotstown when introduced early in the second half before the home team took control with Machailla Mc Cabe entering the fray up front. A succession of Brigid’s scores ended the game as a contest midway through the half. Scotstown elected to give game time to all players present to further this team’s development, Laura Holohan a notable introduction from the bench. Our Juniors’ next outing in the Reserve League is at home vs Clones on Saturday, May 23rd. Minor Girls Our Minor Girls Division 1 side were in action away to Castleblayney on Thursday evening last and recorded a fine 4-12 to 5-5 win in Round 3. In Round 1, the Division 1 North team recorded an excellent 5-4 to 0-2 win over Emyvale, while the Division 3 North side also got off to a winning start with a fine 5-4 to 1-3 victory over Truagh. It is great to see both teams begin their campaigns on a positive note, and we wish all the players and management the very best as the league series continues over the coming weeks. An Ulster final is always one of the biggest and most special occasions in the football calendar, and it promises to be a memorable day for players, management and supporters alike. We send our very best wishes to the Monaghan team and management, and especially to our own club representatives Rory, Ryan, Mícheál, Conor, Jack, and Max as they prepare for this huge occasion. Everyone in Scotstown will be proudly behind them and hoping for a great day for the county. Match essentials Fixture: Monaghan v Armagh — Ulster SFC Final. Date and time: Sunday 17th May, 4:15pm. Venue: Clones. Tickets: Unfortunately, due to the excessive demand for tickets, there had been a significant shortfall in the number of tickets the club can allocate to members. Our allocation was reduced by 34%. We regret that we cannot facilitate all requests. Those who have been allocated tickets will be contacted via message/email by Thursday. If you do not receive a message, unfortunately, tickets have not been allocated. Please do not contact club officers. This was a very onerous task, very much beyond our control. Thanks to everyone for your patience, understanding and support. We fully appreciate the frustration and disappointment this causes, but unfortunately this situation is outside our control. Comhghairdeas Rory — GAA Player of the Week! Massive congratulations to Rory Beggan, who has been voted GAA Footballer of the Week after his incredible display in Monaghan GAA dramatic Ulster Semi Final win over Derry. Rory topped the national vote with 5,966 votes, finishing well ahead of the other nominees — a testament to how widely his performance was admired. Rory was at the heart of everything in one of the most dramatic championship games in recent memory. He finished with three two pointers, including the amazing last gasp final kick winner from 47 metres, and played a crucial role in Micheál Bannigan’s goal. His leadership was just as important as his scoring. In the chaotic closing moments of normal time — with the hooter sounded, confusion on the sideline, and Derry fans spilling onto the pitch — Rory was the one who challenged the referee, insisting Monaghan were entitled to take the sideline ball. That intervention proved vital, as Jack McCarron’s wonderful two pointer sent the game to extra time. From start to finish, Rory delivered a performance of composure, bravery, and sheer class — the kind of display that inspires a team and lifts a county. Everyone in the parish and beyond is immensely proud of you. Well done Rory!!! Rory Beggan on Team of the Week Another massive congratulations to Rory Beggan for making the GAA team of the week for his exceptional and amazing performance during the Semi Final! Well done Rory. Also congratulations to Aughnamullen GAA Mícheál Bannigan and Ballybay Pearse Brothers GAA Dessie Ward for also making the Team of the Week. Minor Ulster Championship Quarter Final Best of luck to the Monaghan Minor team and management as they prepare for their Ulster Championship quarter-final against Donegal this Saturday 16 May at 12:00pm in the Donegal GAA Centre, Convoy. It is a big occasion for the players and management, and we are especially proud of our Scotstown player representatives on the team Darragh Feeney, Seán Mac Cinna, and Chilav Malaya as they look forward to this championship challenge. We wish them every success on the day and hope they can produce a strong performance on the provincial stage. Ulster Ladies Senior Championship Best wishes from Scotstown GAA to the Monaghan senior ladies and management ahead of their Ulster Intermediate Final on this Saturday 16 May at 5:00pm, in Brewster park Enniskillen. It is a tremendous achievement to reach a provincial final, and everyone in the club is delighted to see Scotstown so well represented on the county panel and in the management team. We wish our players on the panel, Éabha Sherry and Casey Treanor, the very best, along with all of the Monaghan players, management team, including Edel Corrigan, and Charlene Sherry in her role as FLO. We hope it is a memorable day for all involved and that Monaghan can produce a big performance to bring the title home. GAA for all is going from strength to strength as we continue with our road show style sessions in Truagh, Emyvale and Scotstown GAA. These clubs together come under the name “Blackwater all stars” and stars they are. They most recently gave a fine display of their skills and talent at half time of the infamous ulster semi final decider between Derry and Monaghan. Saturday 16th May we will commence a 4 week block in Emyvale GAA. You don’t need to be affiliated with any club to participate and new players always welcome. We cater predominantly for players aged 5-15 years old. Any child who would like to try out our additional need training is welcome to come along with a parent or guardian and can bring along a sibling too to help with the transition.
